Ooooogly.

This atrocity belongs to my brother. Okay, so I embellished the hood a bit. But it's still sad.

Blog Connections
Interestingly, she is also a designer (of the interior kind) and used to live in Pennsylvania. Small world.
What struck me most about this brief e-mail exchange is how easy it is for contacts to be made over the Web and what the implications of that are for our society. We are all empowered with instant access to vast amounts of highly specific information. I don't think anyone has thought through exactly the ramifications of all of this.
I was just discussing this with my Uncle last night as it relates to flash mobs. Although basically silly, the cool thing about flash mobs is the power of modern communication and its ability to instantly communicate/organize a group of people and call them to specific action. I often wonder why flash mobs do things like cluck like chickens instead of some kind of meaningful demonstration. Maybe there is some organized activism that uses flash mob-style assemblage, but if there is I haven't heard of it.

Thanks for the note on Paul's Diablog Diablog Lynn. (Got his site Blogrolled!)
Like I tell meself and me s-daughter, "practice practice practice" LOL! If only I'd have believed whomever told me that when I was young! (Someone must have told me that. Right...? I don't recall so probably didn't trust them...)
The paranthetical leads me to the quick answer for your above query:
I think that, in general, people put too much weight on their own actions to do something serious on the spur of the moment or in a manner in which it may be taken too lightly. I think they are afraid that they'll be called a hypocrite for being light hearted about a serious topic. If the "flash mob" activity is meaningless, then they can blow off any criticism with "its just fun."
But if it is in support of their political views or for a cause of some sort, they might hesitate lest their views be considered spurious as well.
Fear sucks.
Paul's blog is the best. Glad you found it and are enjoying it, as I am.
I know what you mean about people being unwilling to take that kind of public risk. But I still think some politically minded individuals would have exploited the whole flash mob paradigm for purposes of political demonstration by now.
You could plan some kind of meaningful demonstration and then send it out only to like-minded people and whammmo! Instant, newsworthy political action. The problem now is that most left-wing demonstrations just aren't covered by the media.

Last Week's Flood Waters

We got some more rain again this week, but nothing too dramatic.
All the changes in the weather have gotten to me health-wise. It's back and forth between the 40's and the 70's and I can't shake this virus or whatever it is I've had lately. Had a fever again last night. I feel better today but still really weak.
I wish Spring would just come already and stay for a while.
